Threads character limit: 500, or 10,000 with text

By PostPen Team ·

A Threads post takes 500 characters. A post without images or a video can go further: Threads lets it carry a text attachment, a longer block of text under the post that readers tap to open. With PostPen you write the whole text once, up to 10,000 characters, and PostPen splits it into the post and its attachment.

What Meta's docs say

Meta's Threads Posts page (Meta for Developers, checked November 3, 2026) says: "Text posts are limited to 500 characters." On links, it says: "The number of links is restricted to 5 or fewer."

Meta's Text Attachments page (Meta for Developers, checked November 3, 2026) gives the attachment's text "a maximum of 10,000 characters," and says attachments work only on text-only posts: not with images, a video or a poll. It counts links across the post and its attachment, with the same link counted once.

How PostPen splits a long text

When a text-only Threads post is longer than 500 characters, PostPen:

  1. Takes the opening for the post. It cuts at the last paragraph break, line, sentence or word that fits in 500 characters, so the post never ends mid-word.
  2. Puts the rest in the text attachment. Readers see your opening on the feed and open the attachment for the full text.
  3. Checks the whole text before scheduling. Over 10,000 characters, or more than 5 links, and PostPen says why before the post is scheduled.

A text of 500 characters or less goes out as a plain post with no attachment.

With images or a video

A Threads post with media stays at 500 characters, because Meta doesn't allow a text attachment there. If your text is longer, PostPen tells you: the post has too many characters for a post with images or a video, and without them Threads takes up to 10,000. Shorten the text, or drop the media to post it long.

Threads takes up to 20 images or one video per post through PostPen, and each image keeps its alt text.

Count your links before you post a long text. Meta refuses a post with more than 5 links, and it counts the post and the attachment together. The same link used twice counts once. PostPen counts the same way and stops a post with 6 before it's scheduled, instead of letting it fail at posting time.

Ask your agent for a long Threads post

Post this newsletter issue to Threads tomorrow at 10 AM as one long post, text only, with the link to the full issue at the end.

Your agent sends the whole text. PostPen puts the opening in the post and the rest in the attachment. If the text breaks a rule, save_draft says why in network_problems. The same post can go to LinkedIn and X too, each with its own version through network_text. See the Threads scheduler for everything PostPen does on Threads.

See the split as you write

In PostPen's Composer, the Threads counter shows how much of a text-only post goes in the post and how much in its attachment, so you can move your strongest line into the first 500.
