X Premium long posts: up to 25,000 characters
By PostPen Team ·
An X account with a subscription can post up to 25,000 characters in one post. A standard account takes 280. PostPen reads which one you have from X and checks every post against your own limit, so a long post goes out whole on a Premium account and as a thread on a standard one.
Start free and connect X. Your agent writes, PostPen schedules and publishes.
Which accounts get 25,000 characters
When you connect X, PostPen asks X for your account's subscription. An account on Basic, Premium or Premium+ gets 25,000 characters per post. An account with no subscription gets 280.
| Account | One post | Longer text |
|---|---|---|
| No subscription | 280 characters | Goes out as a thread of up to 25 posts |
| Basic, Premium or Premium+ | 25,000 characters | Goes out as a thread too, in parts of up to 25,000 |
Your agent sees the limit too: list_destinations gives each X account's max_chars, so it writes to the length your account takes.
Subscribed after connecting X?
PostPen read your subscription when you connected. If you subscribed after that, PostPen still has the standard limit. Two ways to update it:
- In the Composer, the first time your X text passes 280 characters, PostPen asks X again, and the counter moves to 25,000 if X says you subscribe.
- Connect X again on the Social Accounts page. Your scheduled X posts stay with the account.
How X counts the characters
X doesn't count every character as one, and PostPen counts the way X does:
- A link counts as 23 characters, however long it is.
- Most emoji count as 2, as do characters in scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
- Everything else counts as 1, including spaces and line breaks.
So a 25,000 character post with ten links has room for the links at 230 characters, not their full length.
Long post or thread?
On a Premium account, PostPen sends a text up to 25,000 characters as one post. On a standard account, a text past 280 goes out as a thread automatically: numbered posts, each a reply to the one before, with images on the first.
Images, video and the first comment
A long post takes the same media as any X post: up to 4 images or one video, and a GIF goes on its own. Alt text goes with each image. A first comment goes out as a reply right after the post, which is a good place for a link.
Ask your agent for a long post
Write a 1,500-word X post from this article for my X account, and schedule it for Thursday at 8 AM.
Your agent checks your X account's max_chars, writes to fit, and schedules it. If the text is too long for your account, save_draft says why in network_problems and schedule_post waits until it's fixed. See the X scheduler for the rest of what PostPen does on X.
Writing by hand? The Composer counter for X shows your account's own limit, and the preview shows the post as X will.
